Fall Allergies & Eczema Flare Ups

fall allergies

Fall is just around the corner and a whole host of new allergens are about to go on the rampage. During the fall, leaves begin to drift to the ground as moisture rises. This is the time of year when we tend to see the greatest increase in mold and mildew allergies since there are lots of dark, wet places for them to grow. In addition, many areas of the USA will experience ragweed pollen issues this year well into October due to the late summer season. Even if your child isn’t directly allergies to common fall allergies like mold and pollen, these things can make eczema worse by challenging the immune system. Today we’d like to share a few simple ideas with you that can help keep your family free from fall allergies while also keeping eczema flare ups away!

Fall Is In The Air

From pollen to mold, the cool autumn air can be a source of great distress for kids with allergies and sensitivities. One of the best ways to keep your kids away from what’s floating around is to spend more time indoors when breezes kick up. Mold and mildew tend to make themselves known by adding their signature scent to the air, and pollen usually only takes flight when breezes or gusts happen. While this is a great time of year to play outside for kids with eczema since it’s cooler, extra time indoors may be needed.

Filter It!

If you’ll be turning on your heater in the next month or two, make sure to start with a brand new filter if possible. Old filters have spent the summer months collecting dust, allergens, and even dust mites – so getting rid of them is a great way to kick off a new season.

You may also want to run your heaters for the first time while your child is away from home so that any dust or allergens that get stirred up have time to settle or be filtered out.

Moisture Relief

Even thought the weather tends to get wetter in the fall, many people find that the air becomes arid and dry since moisture gets trapped in the ground and in the sky. Using a basic humidifier is a great way to soothe respiratory systems while also purifying and cleansing the air. Be sure to check if your humidifier has been recalled in 2013. All of these simple tips can help keep your child’s immune system calm so that eczema and other issues aren’t challenged – always a good thing!
