Preparing For Winter

As 2012 draws to a close and most of us enter winter weather, it’s a good idea to take some time and plan ahead for your family’s meals for the coming months. During the winter it can be hard and frustrating to get to the store as much as you like, and to find the same variety of foods you are accustomed to in the warmer seasons. For this reason, it’s always a good idea to stock up on foods that will work well with your family’s health needs and keep any allergies or sensitivities at bay.

Many foods that can be stored may contain preservatives that may not work for adults or children with sensitive constitutions, and other use a high level of sodium as a preservative which poses its own problems. Keep your eyes out for these preservatives and high salt content foods to make sure that they don’t occupy too much of your family’s food intake over the coming months.

Another thing to consider during cold months is that many foods people store are usually grains. Instead of opting for traditional grains which may be high in gluten or allergy-inducing for some children, try easier grains like quinoa and amaranth which are known for being nutritious foods with a low allergen content.

Canning fruits and vegetables yourself is a great way to stay in total control of what your family ends up eating, and it also gives you the chance to pack away the things your family loves most. Although it may be too late in the year to can some items, many vegetables are in the perfect state to be canned and preserved right now.

Working with foods that have a naturally long shelf life, low or no preservatives, low or no added sodium, and low allergens is a great way to always have food on hand for those days when venturing out is just too much hassle. You can keep your family healthy and allergy free this season with a little planning and a lot of relying on natural foods!
