The sun is out and it’s finally warm! One of the funnest and most memorable ways to get outside and enjoy an afternoon of play is with sidewalk chalk! The colors of the chalk and the massive canvasses that sidewalks and driveways offer gets kids really excited – and it can keep them busy for hours! As if sidewalk chalk wasn’t fun enough on its own, there’s a way you can get really creative and transform your chalk day into a photo shoot that will look amazing in scrapbooks, online, or as greeting cards.

Using sidewalk chalk to draw scenes, then using those scenes to take photos is so much fun – and kids love it! It helps everyone get on the same page with their artistic creations, and it’s a great way to help kids learn more about teamwork and planning and how that transforms into a finished product they can be proud of.

So, to get started all you need is a big blank space, all of your favorite chalk colors, a camera or just your camera phone, and some creativity!

Starting with environmental scenes like trees, clouds, mountains, and flowers is a great way to get the ball rolling. Kids will usually starts with recognizable natural landmarks like that when they color, so it’s a great way to start the drawing process. You could also talk about memories, favorite places, or favorite fairy tales and try to create them on the pavement.

The main thing parents need to watch for while kids draw is that there’s enough space to place the child once the scene is set. You can outline them in a light color of chalk so they know where not to draw, or you can take breaks to check the scene and make sure they have somewhere to fit within it.

The more colorful, layered, and diverse the scene is, the more it will look amazing on camera! To really bring the photos to life, try adjusting the contrast settings on your camera to help the colors on the concrete ‘pop’ against the more natural tones of your child.

Happy Summer!
