The Search For Non-Dairy Yogurt

My kids absolutely love yogurt, and so do I. It makes such a great treat and it’s a wonderful addition to breakfast. But since we’re eating pretty much completely dairy-free these days, yogurt has had no room in our fridge. I honest miss it! There’s something so comforting about the texture, taste, and healthy treat nature of yogurt that I really want to get back in my life and the life of my kids – but is there a dairy free yogurt option? I’ve been doing all kinds of research to see what’s out there and what my family might respond well to, and I’d like to share what I’ve found with you today.

Success!

I want to start this off with some good news. There are in fact completely dairy-free yogurt options out there that I found to be totally safe for my kids. I was able to hunt down a variety of brands, flavors, and yogurt styles and I am really excited to try them out. I also found reviews online by other moms and got some good ideas about what I might want to try first. I’ll share one of my favorite reviews with you at the end of this post.

Soy Irritating!

As I expected, there’s one downside to all of the non-dairy yogurt alternatives I found on the market. Most of them are soy based. For my family, that’s not a big deal as long as we enjoy it in moderation – but I know lots of families who would get just as much trouble from a soy yogurt as they would a dairy yogurt.

If someone at your breakfast table has a soy sensitivity, or if you’re concerned about getting too much in your diet, make sure to read the labels. You’ll find that soy yogurt versions are the easiest to stumble upon, so you may have to look harder for other options.

Coconut To The Rescue!

One of the highest reviewed and best loved dairy-free yogurts I found online is actually made from coconut milk and fat. While this wouldn’t be a good option for anyone with a coconut or general nut allergy, it’s a great way to get the amazing yogurt texture and taste without dairy or soy.

From what I’ve found, coconut yogurt has a texture that’s more true to a dairy yogurt, and it has a natural sweetness which means the manufacturers don’t have to add as much.

Really Rice!

Last but not least, rice milk yogurt does exist but I’ve had a really hard time tracking it down or finding detailed information about rice milk varieties, but the few things I have found make it sound really delicious, creamy, and flavorful – so it may be worth the extra effort to track it down!

Here’s that great review I was talking about earlier:
