Healthy Oil Alternatives

Many experts believe that the wrong kind of oil can contribute to inflammation cycles, toxicity, odd food flavors, and lost nutrients. When it comes to cooking, the right oils can make all the difference both in how they work with the foods you create and how they nourish and work with the body. Children who have food sensitivities are particularly susceptible to bad oils, so it’s a good idea to look at what you use in your kitchen and to learn more about how simple oil changes can lead to drastic health improvements. Today we’re going explore several healthy oil alternatives to common canola and vegetable oils. We’ll look at what to cook with, massage into skin, and dress salads and breads with for great health benefits!

Coconut Oil

This light, delicate oil has become a favorite among chefs because of its high cooking point and amazing flavor. Coconut oil is not appropriate for people with actual coconut allergies, but it may be a great alternative for others. This oil is solid at room temperature and takes on a light and hydrating texture when warmed in a pan or in the hands. Many skin experts rave about its ability to soothe and heal the skin, even eczema, when applied topically.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

This oil is not great for cooking as it can go bad even in low heat, but it’s a great addition to salads and other dishes and proffers an array of health benefits. EVOO is added to make skin and hair products because of its many nourishing elements.

Sesame Oil

This Eastern favorite packs a big flavor punch in a small quantity. It has a variety of health benefits and may be a great common oil alternative for adventurous home chefs!

Grapeseed Oil

This may be the best alternative for high temperature cooking. Grapeseed oil is light and colorful, and it keeps itself in shape even with frying. It’s also low in cholesterol and great for the heart!

Ghee

Although not a true oil, ghee is a great alternative for butter lovers. Ghee is used extensively in Southeast Asia and is made by removing the fat from butter through a gentle clarifying process. You can even find easy recipes to make ghee at home! Ghee has a buttery, almost nutty flavor that works great with any dish where normal butter might be used.

This is the perfect time of year to experiment with new oils and see which ones work best for you and your family. Enjoy!
