Fun Family Field Trips With A Purpose

fun family field trips

There’s no better way to keep kids happy, active, and scratch-free than to keep them busy and engaged! One of the funnest ways my family makes this happen is with field trips. We love to go out into our community and explore all of the neat things happening there every day, and I like getting creative about where we could go and what kinds of lessons I can give my kids while we’re there.

Many parents think that a day out is going to cost a lot of money and take a lot of time. The fact is, however, that every community is filled with opportunities (many of them free!) you can tap into and have a fun, educational, and adventurous time with your family.

Here are some of my favorite places to explore. As you read this list, try and imagine doing the same with your family and also try and guess how much each event cost us!

  • Fire Station
  • Farms
  • Community Gardens
  • Trails for hiking
  • Bird watching at local parks
  • Historic buildings
  • The top of the tallest building in your area
  • Local Zoo, Aviary, or Aquarium
  • Picnics with a view of heavy construction or demolition sites (great for boys!)
  • Community events like yard sales, cultural celebrations, or clean up days

The list is literally endless!

There are so many amazing things to do with your kids – and all of them can have some pretty amazing life lessons that are fun to pick up along the way. Getting your kids involved in what’s happening in the community around them can help them have greater respect for the environment, people doing helpful jobs, animals, food, production, and a whole lot more. Experience really is the best educator!
